About Swamp in Florida

Florida is home to Big Cypress, the largest cypress swamp in the United States, and to Ten Thousand Islands, one of the largest mangrove swamps in the world. These swamps are home to a unique flora and fauna sets, which is found only in these protected areas. Plants have special adaptations to survive swamps in Florida, including aerial roots to support respiration and buttressed tree trunks for additional support.

Florida Swamp Plants

types of wetlandsThe state of Florida is home to thousands of miles of wetlands, swamps and flood lands. Although the word “swamp”, people do not usually produce a pleasant image in their minds, the fact is that, under the shady canopy of cypress and mangrove flora trees lurks hauntingly beautiful flora in a different ecosystem.

Things You Not Know about Florida Swamps

• Wetlands are land areas where surface water level is largely above the ground.

• The main types of wetlands are swamps, bogs, fens and marshes.
• Fens and bogs occur in cold climates, and contents lots of partially rotted plant materials called peat.
• Swamps and marshes are found in cold and warm places. There are more plants than fens and bogs.
• Marshes are permanently in wet areas such as shallow lakes and river deltas. Rushes and reeds are growing in the marshes.
• Swamps develop where the level of water varies – often along the banks of rivers in tropical regions, where they are flooded, especially along the Amazon and Congo rivers.
• Half of the wetlands in the United States were drained before most people will recognize their value. Just about half of the Dismal Swamp in North Carolina has been drained.
• Marshes on the borders of Belorussia which is Pripet are the largest in Europe, covering 270,000 square kilometer.
• Wetlands act like sponges and help to control flooding.
• Wetlands help to integrate the supplies of groundwater.
• Previously, wetlands were seen simply as dead place, ripe for draining. Now their value for water and wildlife control will be start realizing.

What are 4 Facts for a Florida Swamp?

• There are two types of swamps, shrub and forested swamps.
• In United States, swamps cover about 100,000 square miles.
• Swamps develop in wet climates.
• Swamps contain a natural filtration system, which cleans the water even better than our man-made factories.

5 Steps on How to Walk in a Swamp

1. Know the ground around the swamp. If you can look the map in advance to see if there are any steams, rivers or lakes around the swamp. If there is a body of water next to the swamp, there will be a solid surface or ground near the banks.
2. Use any plants or rocks to step on when you start walking through the swamp. Remember; do not stay too long, because they might sink.
3. Avoid stepping on mud flats, because they might be like quick sand.
4. Walk along areas where there are reeds and cattails. These plants are stronger that you can hold onto as you walk along.
5. If you want to cross a stream or ditch, walk through the center, because the bottom will be stronger than at the edges.

Preserve our wetlands Climate

by admin on October 15, 2011

What We Need To Do to Preserve Our Wetlands Climate

These lands are created by a heavy storm or rain. This land gradually turns to a wetland. All such places are exposed to water and this water cannot flow in any direction. This property of water makes the soil unfit for cultivation. But we can see some vegetation growing out of water but in fact it must be some algae or other water plants. The soil of wetland contain high organic content than terrestrial soil. In our ecosystem, these wetlands have a great importance. So it is very much required to protect these types of land.

wetlands climateDue to the high level of Carbon in the soil, this plays a vital role in the regulation of Carbon dioxide. Methane(organic compound of Carbon) is also generated on decomposition of organic plants. A slight change in many properties of different soil and areas, affects the climate both positively and negatively. The changes in wetland affects the greenhouse because carbon dioxide is an important greenhouse gas. To control the exchange of carbon dioxide, it is not only needed to generate the gas, but also required to release it. If any problem or stress is happened to this land, it will adversely affect the ecosystem. The temperature level also gets badly affected. Most of these peat lands are on temperate zones. Here summers are warm and winters are cold. Wetlands on such places helps in maintaining the warmth throughout the year.

Commonly problems That Happen To Our Wetlands Climate  when man acts ignorantly

Nowadays all humans know about our earth and how it is getting polluted. Even though they are aware of it, they are not ready to do accordingly. They think, one man’s action will not affect it. This creates wrong effects. Each man’s action contributes a lot. There is suitable example to say, i.e conversion of wetlands to farmland and this again converted to build houses or building.

Mitigation of this wetland(otherwise called peat land) adversely affect the ecosystem and results in many climate change. It have another duty to provide habitat for different aquatic plants and animals. Surveys say that 3% of the land is filled by peat lands and contributes 7% of the Carbon dioxide and carbon compounds of the air. Just imagine then, how much plants and animals are affected by the degradation of this land.Burning and mining of certain places for different needs are also harmful to the soil. Burning results the loss of minerals of the soil and due to the high level of carbon, burning this soil cause the emission of poisonous gas (like carbon monoxide)and smoke. this also affects the underwater drainage too. This influences formation of clouds and affects rainfall adversely.

This process of misuse can be prevented only after giving a deep knowledge to the common people

Otherwise all other processes remain useless and each people are able to protect it. Country wise conservation is also being done in many parts. The growth of such land will be able to resolve many environmental problems and this can help us a lot.
